What if prison, but curse? Joko Anwar’s horror films have emerged from the genre’s murky depths to become absolute hidden gems. Whilst his ‘Satan’s Slave’ series draws on virtually every cliché, it cranks the intensity up a notch: with an unusual level of brutality and an almost encyclopaedic understanding of the subject matter, his Indonesian horror films have quite rightly become audience favourites.

In Ghost in the Cell, he blends grotesque kill-cam choreography, dark humour and suspense for the first time to create a film that changes its tone in almost every scene. Every kill outdoes the last. Yes, this film is great fun – and in the end, there’s even a moral to it.

Seine „Satan’s Slave“-Reihe bedient sich dabei zwar quasi aller Klischees, dreht den Pegel jedoch hoch: In ungewohnter Härte und mit einem beinahe enzyklopädischen Verständnis des Stoffes sind seine indonesischen Horrorperlen vollkommen zurecht zu Publikumslieblingen geworden.

In Ghost in the Cell vermischt er erstmals groteske Kill-Cam-Choreografien, bitteren Humor und Spannung zu einem Film, der beinahe mit jeder Szene seine Flughöhe ändert. Jeder Kill übertrifft den letzten. Ja, dieser Film macht Spaß – und eine Moral gibt es auch noch.
