In the first block of the Aachen Competition, surroundings are cast in unusually dark shadows – whether in the thundering bass of a music video, grainy animation, or an expressionistic shadow play. Some things shine brighter in the dark; political backdrops, be it the deafening Lützerath or a game of hide-and-seek between prison and kiosk.
