Not only the skin is liquid in Brazil’s iconic world of high-society beauty the very fabric of meaning within the state apparatus dissolves as well. Unlike other dystopian classics, Brazil portrays the total bureaucratic nightmare. Much like Kafka’s The Trial, the system operates as an opaque and alien force. Bureaucracy becomes a tool of oppression; paperwork, signatures, and stamps leave behind human casualties. At the same time, the decadent excess of the upper class persists. We are thrilled to screen Abseits (Offside) at Filmstudio, as an Auswärtsspiel, an afterimage, and a final, reflective nuance once the main festival program has come to a close.

Nicht nur die Haut ist flüssig in Brazil’s ikonischer Welt der High-Society-Schönheitskultur – auch der Sinn im staatlichen Gefüge löst sich auf. Anders als viele andere dystopische Klassiker zeigt Brazil den totalen bürokratischen Albtraum. Ähnlich wie in Kafkas Der Prozess agiert das System als eine undurchsichtige, uns fremde Macht. Bürokratie wird zum Unterdrückungsinstrument – Formulare, Unterschriften und Stempel fordern menschliche Opfer. Gleichzeitig bleibt der dekadente Überfluss der Oberschicht bestehen.
